If you (like me) weren't fortunate enough to get picked in the New York Marathon lottery there are other ways you can still get your race bib. Charities keep a certain numbers of spaces open so any runner willing to commit to raising some cash for a good cause can sign up and get a spot in the race. Here are a few options:
Team for Kids: This is the official charity for the NY Roadrunners - their goal is to help fight childhood obesity and how can you not support that?
Back on my Feet: This is a charity based in Philadelphia that helps homeless people by encouraging them to develop work and life skills as part of a running program. Here's a good article on them from Runner's World.
Alzheimer's Association New York Chapter: The Alzheimer's Association is fighting a difficult battle against a horrible disease.
Autism Speaks: Autism speaks raises awareness of autism spectrum disorders and works to raise funds for research and advocates on behalf of individuals and families dealing with autism.
The DOE Fund, Inc.: "Ready, Willing and Able" uses job and skill training to fight homelessness and criminal recidivism.
There are many great charities holding spaces for the New York City Marathon. Here's a RaceRaiders user review of the 2008 New York Marathon to get you fired up!
Alternatively, if asking for money isn't something you're comfortable with, there are lots of other marathons that aren't sold out as well. Try the Philadelphia Marathon taking place on November 22nd - here's a user review from the 2008 run so you can get a feel for it.
In the meantime, email your race reviews to raceraiders@gmail.com and let us know how your "training races" are going!
