The Philadelphia Women's Duathlon and Triathlon are both sprint races that take place simultaneously along the Schuylkill River in July. I did the duathlon race (2 mi. run/17 mile bike/ 3.1 mile run) this past July and had a great time. I chose the duathlon because I was pretty uncomfortable about swimming in the River both because of currents and because it seems pretty filthy. I've gotten a lot of feedback from people who have done the tri and other Philly races that the water is fine to swim in, though. I'm planning on doing another one next summer in this river, so I guess I'll find out...
But this duathlon was a great race. It's extremely flat, with only a gradual incline on the bike course coming up to and around the art museum, which was probably only an incline because the rest of the course was so flat! The runs are both out and back run courses and the bike is a double loop ride. The only negative aspect of this race is the heat -- Philly in July is hot and humid and the heat definitely affected my second run. I think it would be great if the race started an hour earlier (it starts at 8) to avoid some of it.
One thing to keep in mind is that the race start is not accessible by car and we found it kind of difficult to find -- if you can get there the day before (I think packet pick-up is the day before anyway, so you're forced to). We got lost trying to find it and we're from that area. Parking is not easy to find, either, so get there early. The race is well-organized with good pre-race packets and information. The transition area is small and a little tight, and got a bit chaotic because they were letting the duathlon finishers leave with their bikes with triathlon runners were still transitioning. Overall, though, it was a great race and a lot of fun. I would definitely do it again.

I rented a road bike for the race at Human Zoom in Manayunk and that worked out well. It's one of the only places in the area that rents road bikes.
